About This Plant

Ausubo, also known as Balata or Massaranduba (Mimusops balata, syn. Manilkara bidentata), is a long-living evergreen fruit tree native to the Tropical Americas. It is a slow-growing member of the Sapotaceae family and is related to Miracle Fruit and Mamey. The tree bears smooth shelled, edible yellow fruit with sweet, pulpy flesh and a seedy center. The wood is highly ornamental, durable, and a preferred timber for construction, boat frames, violin bows, and billiard cues. Leaves can be used to make an astringent decoction, and its milky latex can be tapped for balata gum. The tree can withstand brief frosts and has been known to live up to 400 years.
