Mango Pickering (Mangifera indica) - Dwarf/Compact Orchard Mango Tree
About This Plant
Mango Pickering (Mangifera indica) is a compact, fast-growing fruit tree in the Cashew family. It is believed to be a cross between Carrie and Irwin varieties. The tree grows to 10–15 feet with a 15-foot canopy, and can be kept smaller in containers. It bears fruit at a young age with evergreen rosettes of leaves and pinkish-yellow flowers that bloom in late winter to early spring. Fruits mature midsummer, weighing 0.75–1.5 lbs, with a green to yellow, blushing pink, purplish skin. The yellow-orange, firm, creamy, mostly fiberless pulp is very sweet with a coconut-mango or piña colada flavor.
Fruits can be eaten fresh or used in salads, smoothies, and desserts. Mangoes are noted for vitamins, minerals, and antioxidant properties. Pickering mangoes are hardy in USDA zones 9–11 with some frost protection when young. They prefer well-draining soil, full sun, and moderate moisture.
